Why

A small problem with clumsy solutions.

Most cuticle products come in a tub you have to dig into — with the hand that needs the balm. The rest are oils that run everywhere, or they smell like a pharmacy shelf.

We wanted the other kind: something that lives in a pocket, goes on in one pass, and sinks in while you keep working. Small enough that using it daily isn't a decision you have to make.

Scale

Fourteen and a half millimetres wide.

The carton is narrower than a pencil and about as long. It stands up on a desk, lies flat in a coat pocket, and disappears into the smallest bag you own.

Inside

Five conditioning oils and butters, in a slow-melting balm base.

  • Shea ButterThe body of the balm. Rich, slow to melt, stays where you put it.
  • Jojoba Seed OilClose to skin's own oils, so it sinks in without leaving a film.
  • Avocado OilSoftens the dry, tight skin at the base of the nail.
  • Argan Kernel OilSmooths rough edges along the cuticle line.
  • Castor Seed OilSeals the rest in and holds moisture in place.
  • Vitamin ETocopheryl acetate, for the oils as much as for the skin.

No added colour

We took the colour out.

The base formula our lab started from was tinted with a cosmetic dye. There is no reason a balm for your hands needs to be yellow, so we asked them to reformulate without it.

What you see here is what's left: the balm itself, uncoloured, and every ingredient in it there to do something.

How to use

  1. Twist up. A quarter turn is plenty. The balm is firm and goes a long way.
  2. One pass per nail. Swipe along the base of the nail, following the cuticle line.
  3. Press it in. Work it in with your thumb. Daily, or whenever your hands feel tight.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children.

Story

94107 is a zip code.

It's the one in San Francisco where this started, and where the brand is still run from. The product itself is made in Korea, at a lab we work with directly — in Korean, with nobody in between.

That arrangement is the reason we can change something as small as a dye and have it actually done. It's also the whole plan: a short line of honest, everyday things, each one worked out properly before it ships.

What comes next

The balm is the first of a short line.

94107 is a beauty and wellness brand, not a single product. Everything we make will be small, everyday, and worked out properly before it ships — the same way this one was.
